The Norwegian National Graduate School in Teacher Education - NAFOL


NAFOL is a national graduate school offering specialised education and training in the thematic fields of pre-school, school and teacher education, and was established to strengthen a research based perspective in the fields mentioned.

NAFOL is organised as a partnership between 7 Norwegian univer­sities and 17 university colleges, and is co-ordinated by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology Management, at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim.

NAFOL  gets support from NFR and is directly under PRAKUT research program.

NAFOL aims to provide PhD students with

  • - Seminars
  • - Conferences - national and international - in Norway
  • - Economic support related to the above activities
  • - Economic support related to research periods abroad

Lectures, discussions and written material connected to the seminars and conferences will be in Norwegian (as a main rule).


NAFOL receives funding from the Norwegian Research Council from 2010 through 2016.

NAFOL student of the week
Tanja Walla


Tanja Walla is a PhD student at Nesna University College. In addition to the PhD study she teach science education at the first degree teacher education programme and at the master`s degree programme. Her background is the general teacher education programme.

NAFOL supervisor of the month

Anna-Lena Østern


Anna-Lena Østern is for the time being main supervisor of four NAFOL candidates; Ela Sjølie (has her dissertation in august), Solveig Å. Bendiksen, Halvor Spetalen and Nora Sitter. She is second supervisor for NAFOL candidate Carla Chinga. Until now two NAFOL candidates supervised by her have completed their doctoral studies: Elin Angelo and Britt Karin Støen Utvær. Anna-Lena Østern´s main research themes are forms of knowledge and ways of learning. She has had a special focus on communication, multimodal communication and cultural literacy.
